Bible Study on Fasting

Matthew 9:15 NASB

And Jesus said to them, “The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Recently, I was asked to teach on the subject of fasting. I knew I was dealing with a subject that is not practiced a whole lot these days. What’s more, I live in a country where the national pastime is eating. Let’s face it—we all love our edibles. So it’s kind of strange to talk about fasting to a group of people who would prefer discussing their favorite fast food!

Long ago, the disciples of Jesus were feasting at a time when fasting was considered the religiously correct thing to do. Not surprisingly, they were criticized for not fasting as the other people were doing (Matthew 9:14). Jesus stated that His disciples would fast only after He was taken away from them (v.15). Many Bible scholars believe that we are living in the time He was referring
to—between His ascension and His second coming (Acts 1:9-12). If that’s true, this is the time for us to fast.

Jesus asked: “Do wedding guests mourn while celebrating with the groom?” (Matthew 9:15). By this question He revealed a key reason for fasting— repentance and sorrow for sin. When convicted of idolatry, the Jews repented with fasting (1 Samuel 7:3-6). And due to national emergencies, they fasted again, humbly trusting God to act on their behalf (2 Chronicles 20:1-4; Esther 4:16).

Only one direct command to fast is found in Scripture. The Israelites were to fast once a year on the Day of Atonement. On that day, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies to offer sacrifices to atone for the sins of the whole nation (Leviticus 16:29-31). Fasting also reminds us that it is God who sustains us. Food may keep us going physically, but God’s Word sustains us spiritually (Matthew 4:4).

Since fasting was something that the Jews did and since Jesus was talking to and dealing with Jewish customs and Jewish believers at the time and since once Paul came on the scene and Jew and Gentile become one in the age of grace…I am have seen no record of fasting in the Pauline epistles to the age of grace (church the body of christ) which is for the believer today. I know that most people on this blog site are not dispensationalists like I am so for them my opinon will not apply but for me I believe that Paul was the epistle to the Age of Grace and he doesn’t teach fasting so for me fasting is not pertinent. Also even when there was fasting, it wasn’t a law or an ordinance. For me as a hypoglycemic and my husband who is a diabetic I cannot fast..so that is my view on fasting…but like I say…I am a grace-walker and a dispensationalist and a divider of the word of God as it teaches in 2 Tim. 3:15…and I know this isn’t popular in the world of Christianity…but I voiced my view anyways.

Your opinion is totally cool Patti. I’ve been taught not that it is a requirement, but as something you do that helps focus your mind on Christ. By denying oneself something that we totally enjoy and need (but NOT to the point of hurting our health), we can super-focus on prayer and Christ. What are some other things that might super-focus someone, who cannot use food for health reasons?

I just thought of one… SEX! lol The Bible does mention that one by name in 1 Cor 7:5. I bet there are so many more though!

For me, when I turn to fasting, it’s because my life has become indulgent and think of everything but the things of God. But I always return 2 Chronicles 7:14 to remind me that I need be healed when I become sick and am in trouble.
