Ideas to Make Summer Sunday School Work for You!
Adapted from Barbara Beach

The hot weather of Summer can pose some problems for little ones when it comes to sitting still when it is so nice outside!  Here are a few tips that will allow for a successful Sunday school class…

  • Recruit junior highers, senior highers, and empty nesters.  Both have different things to offer your Sunday school class.
  • Use those you recruit, to in turn recruit…remember that saying that if 3 people tell 3 people….and so on.
  • Recruit teachers for a year. “Teachers understand that they are committing.  It will help a lot if you give them some flexibility during the summer months.
  • Don’t forget to invite past volunteers and teachers back for round two!

Sunday School Curriculum

Be creative with curriculum so that you cater to those with short attention spans…

  • Do outside activities. For example, try setting up stop-and-go sprinklers. Then kids act as if they are Moses crossing the Red Sea.
  • Make sure that even if your students miss one week, they will be able to understand the lessons…don’t make each week contingent upon last week’s attendance.
  • Do creative activities like skits and crafts.  Avoid workbooks.
  • Use the same curriculum all year.  This will help create connection.  However, don’t be afraid to go beyond the scope of what they tell you to do.
  • Switch up the surroundings!  It can old being in the same 20×20 space every week.  If your surroundings allow for it, have a sunday school class outside, or in another room.
  • Meet on a different day. Judy Johnson from Minnesota directs a summer community Bible school with 14 churches and 600 kids. The different age groups meet two to three times a week—and not on Sunday.  This will help create variety for your small group or sunday school class.

Does anyone else have some ideas on how you can make the most of the Summer months and Sunday school classes?

It takes something to guide yougsters the right way. I wouldn’t know the first thing of where to start. I just know I have to turn and

become like a child…trusting, simple, meek and teachable and above all forgiving…children break up and make up in an hour. We adults

take years to forgive something! Good blog. I certainly can use a few tips on how to deal with the young generation. Thanks.

Ok, some of those are fun just to do with your own kids in the backyard! I never thought of using stop and go sprinkles and playing Moses parting the red sea. lol What a neat idea! I bet my kids will enjoy that!
