The Purpose of Life
I believe that each one of God’s creations, especially we who are His children, have a definite purpose in life. Yes, I know that we are here in this life to prepare ourselves for eternity in Heaven and as the Bible teaches us, God created us for His own pleasure, but we as individuals each have a God given destiny, a work of some kind to accomplish before the end of this life comes.
For some of us, the work might be something great like managing a World wide evangelistic ministry, or becoming the President, or similar things such as that. But for most of us it is probably something not quite as profound. Our God given task might be as simple as being at the right place at the right time to witness about the Lord, or to provide some help for a person in need. It is my belief that God gives each one of us opportunities to do things for others, and for Him that might seem to us as being insignificant at the time.
But is anything that we do, or have the opportunity to do, insignificant in God’s sight? Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 25:35-36. He identified some things that were important to Him. Giving food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, clothes to one who had none etc. These small things are as important to God as the greater things are.
The Bible gives us many examples of those who God predestined in advance to accomplish His will for certain things to be accomplished. For just a few examples, there is Moses whom God chose to be the deliverer of the Israelites from Egypt. He chose Pharaoh of Egypt during the time of Moses in order to demonstrate His power through him. David was chosen to become the King over His people. The Apostles were chosen in advance to be the firstfruits of the kingdom under the discipleship of Jesus. And lastly, Paul was chosen to be an apostle to the Gentiles.
There are those whom God has predestined to be great leaders, prophets, martyrs and do other notable deeds, then there are those who God has chosen to perform even smaller tasks. But I believe that each one of us has at least one specific task to perform, one or more things that God has determined for us to do before our mortal life is over.
Sometimes I wonder if I have accomplished everything that God has determined for me to do in this life. Have I taken advantage of every opportunity that has been set before me to accomplish for His glory. I’m pretty sure that my answer to that question would be that I have not. I know that God has given me many more opportunities than I have taken advantage of and because I didn’t do those things, I feel like I failed to accomplish everything that He had predestined me to do.
Looking forward to that day when we all will stand before Him and give an account for our lives, I can just see how embarrassed and unworthy I will feel, because I know that I have failed Him so many times. How many times have I crossed the street to avoid a homeless person begging for help and instead of offering help, say to myself they should get a job. How many times have I been rude to someone coming to the door, trying to sell something to make a living and turned them away without giving due consideration to why they were there.. I wonder just how many opportunities the Lord has given me to make a difference in someone’s life and I have turned my back on that opportunity.
It would be easier if we knew exactly what God wanted us to accomplish, but you see, life is not that way. Oh Lord, I say to myself, let me go back and face all of those opportunities over again and I’ll do things differently. But you know that we can’t go back. So the next best thing is to stop looking back and look forward, making a difference in the remaining days that we have.
Have you ever given thought to any of this? Have you accomplished all that God has destined for you to do?
The scripture tells us that God has created us for His own pleasure and without faith it is impossible to please Him. But I can’t believe that God would be pleased with us who just have faith and fail to accomplish all that He has given us opportunity to do.
I feel like that I have not pleased Him as much as I should have and accomplished His every purpose for me in this life. How about any of you, can you relate to this? Have you accomplished every purpose in life that God has expected from you?
***Note, a great book on this topic is the bestselling “Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren.
