Follow the Leader… Jesus’ Way

Try this activity from Group’s BibleSense™: I Peter: Standing Firm in Jesus DVD Bible Study, to discover how honoring those in authority also honors and glorifies God.

Get into groups of four, and give each group a large sketch pad and marker. Say something like: We’ve all read the comic strips, watched the TV shows, breathed a sigh of relief and thought: Thank goodness my boss isn’t that bad…or is he (or she)? A bad boss can make life at work…well, not so great. Imagine the worst possible boss. Pass around the sketch pad. Let your subgroup leader start off by drawing a stick figure, then write down around it whatever you think of when you think of a bad boss. Go ahead and shout out what you’re writing.

Once everyone’s had a chance to write, discuss the following questions:

  • When have you worked for an infuriatingly bad boss? What happened?
  • How do you think God used you in (or despite) that situation?

Come back together as a group, and discuss your answers. Then read 1 Peter 2:22-25, and answer the following questions:

  • Look at verse 23-what does it reveal about Jesus’ trust in his heavenly Father?
  • How can you trust God in the face of having to work for (or follow) someone who is not respectable, a bad leader, or even immoral?
  • How do you think your submission could glorify God in such a situation?

If there’s someone like this in your life right now, what’s one thing you can do to show God’s love to this person through your lifestyle and actions in this coming week?
