Watch the Focus Action Update video.
Dear Friends,
We have three important updates for you this week, two of which deal with good news regarding our efforts to protect marriage.
Marriage Upheld in California
I’m sure you’ve heard by now that the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, the state marriage-protection amendment approved by voters last November. This is wonderful news and, ironically, the court that affirmed the amendment is the very one that originally legalized same-sex marriage last year. Perhaps these judges are finally realizing that it’s their job to interpret law, respect the will of the people and not create law out of whole cloth!
Philippine Amb. Hilario Davide
Marriage Praised at the UN
I’m also excited to share with you about a lunch briefing Focus on the Family® hosted earlier this week at the UN Headquarters in New York. About 60 ambassadors and diplomats gathered to hear from experts who explained that kids thrive best when raised by their married mom and dad.
This was a significant message for the ambassadors to hear, as they are being asked to protect homosexuality as a basic human right. The speakers included Mr. Lee Wee Min, regional director for Focus on the Family Asia, as well as Philippine Ambassador Hilario Davide, who spoke passionately about God’s design for marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
President Obama’s Supreme Court Pick
Of course, the third piece of news this week is President Obama’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to replace retiring Justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court. Those who believe the chief qualification for a Supreme Court justice is an unswerving commitment to strictly interpret the Constitution are alarmed by this nomination.
President Obama has praised Judge Sotomayor for her “empathy,” and she has stated: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
But here is what then-Senator Obama said in 2004: “There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America–there is the United States of America.” If you’re confused by this sudden swerve, so are we.
By the way, I just joined Stuart Shepard for a Focus Action Update, to discuss these three important issues.
As we head into the busy summer months, will you join with us in prayer for our nation, as well as in support for our work?
Thanks for standing with us in support of the family!
For marriage and family,
