Learning to Let Go

Try this idea when training your small-group or church leaders. Or use it as a way to get your group members think about what it takes to help the people they lead — at home,  work, or elsewhere — learn to do things for themselves.

Have everyone get into groups of four, and have them decide who each group’s leader will be. Give each leader an un-blown-up balloon, and say something like: Leaders, here’s your mission: Over the next two minutes, blow up your balloon, and then bat it to your fellow group members, who’ll keep it in the air. One catch, leaders: Once you put the balloon in the air, you can’t touch it again. Go!

After two minutes, regain everyone’s attention, keeping them with their groups. Then discuss:

  • Leaders: What was it like watching your team but not being able to help them?
  • Everyone: In what ways were your leaders still participating?
  • How is this similar to leadership in your own church right now?

How is it like your own approach to leadership right now?
