The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller (Book Review)
From the author of the New York Times best-selling book, Reason for God comes another book, The Prodigal God: Finding Your Place At The Table that will surely make waves this season. Pastor Timothy Keller of the Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Manhattan, has been branded by Newsweek as “a C.S. Lewis for the twenty first century” probably for his eloquence in writing and for his deep foundations in the Bible particularly the gospel message of Jesus Christ.
This 7-chapter book that can be read within an hour teaches on the almost trite parable of Jesus of all time—the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. He made a distinction between the two sons—the younger one personifying the blatant sinners, irreligious, immoral, and unbelievers who are now outside the church and the older one representing the Pharisees, Sadducees, moralists, and the believers inside the church. According to Pastor Timothy, both sons are prodigal meaning “recklessly extravagant or having spent everything” and in need of love from their father (Father God).
More than all the comparative overtones between these two prodigals, this book is all about a prodigal God who is so extravagant in showering mercy, grace and forgiveness to these two groups of people. Reading it will soak one to an abounding grace of God as the author compassionately weaves his words to reach out to those who are cast out, downtrodden, shunned, bounded to sin and morally depraved. It also searches the hearts and motives of the religious / moralists who envy and despise the extended grace of the prodigal God to the sinful. The “true elder brother”, Jesus Christ offers salvation to the two lost sons and paved the way to invite them to the Prodigal God’s banquet feast.
The Prodigal God is available as a book, teaching film, and a discussion guide facilitating a six-week experience for churches and small groups sold in our Christian bookstore.
