Thursday's Tip for Small Groups

October 1, 2009

Try this icebreaker to start a conversation with yuor group about what it takes to follow Jesus’ lead — wherever he chooses to lead us.

Have everyone get into groups of 4, and give everyone a note card. Make sure everyone’s got something to write with. Say something like: Without sharing with anyone else in your group yet, on the top of your card write down one abnormal fear each of you have. Then, on the bottom of your card, write a phrase or sentence about a time when you feel you showed an unusual amount of courage. When you’re done, turn your cards over.

Allow about a minute for everyone to write. Then say something like: Now, mix your cards up. Let each person draw a card and try to guess who it belongs to. As each of your identities are revealed, share a little more about your fears and your acts of courage. Then discuss these questions together:
• Which was easier to come up with — a fear or an act of courage? Why?
• What drives us to such strong responses, whether it’s fear or courage?
Bring everyone back together, and share highlights and insights from your discussion time. Then, discuss this question together:
• How can fear and doubt — whether it’s about what God wants, our own motives and capabilities, or something else — cause us to miss, or even run away from, what God wants?
