The Sacred Romance by John Eldredge and Brent Curtis (Book Review)

Perhaps readers might wonder what kind of a romance novel this book is being labeled as The Sacred Romance. John Eldredge and Brent Curtis released this book in 1997 but after more than a decade, this Christian book still impacts believers from all denominations across the globe.

The Sacred Romance is not a story of a man and woman falling in love with each other and living happily ever after. It is about God passionately pursuing us– His beloved into a journey of intimacy, beauty, and adventure. It is like a preparation of His bride, the Body of Christ, to a wedding banquet with God for intimacy. God restlessly longs for us to have a deeper communion with Him. We have been so preoccupied with our daily duties and obligations in our family, work, play, and church and we find little (if not none) time to listen to him in our hearts. John Eldredge and Brent Curtis through The Sacred Romance guides the readers to value their hearts because only in so doing will they be able to know who they are, their longings, desires, woundings, and pains. It is also through the heart that one can truly know and love God.

God is and always will be wooing us. He is such a “Lover of the Soul” that will not cease showing and showering us with His unconditional love. John Eldredge and Brent Curtis humbly and in a relaxed tone wrote The Sacred Romance teaching us to search deep within our hearts the internal matters we at times overlook, neglect or ignore. They contend that internal (heart) should be a priority over the externals (circumstances, preoccupations).

If Wild At Heart is for men and Captivating is for women, The Sacred Romance is written for both men and women to enter, live, and dive into an exciting intimacy with God that is far better than sexual intimacy. The Sacred Romance is biblically-sound with a balance of the Old and New Testament perspectives though not boring or sounding “preachy”. It is interspersed with film and popular character imagery like Forrest Gump, Helen of Troy, Pilgrim’s Progress, When Harry Met Sally, A River Runs Through It, Henry V, Soren Kierkegaard, The Hobbit, Cinderella, Robert Frost, Alice In Wonderland, etc.

The Sacred Romance comes in softcover, workbook and journal, and audio.

The Sacred Romance and other Christian books are available in our Christian book store or wherever books are sold.
