When I Don’t Desire God by John Piper (Book Review)
“The chief end of man is to glorify God.” We are exhorted in the Scriptures to desire and delight in God. Is there any difference with those two words? What do you do when you don’t desire God yet you want to find joy in Him? Is it too late to give it a try?
When I Don’t Desire God: How To Fight for Joy is another enlightening resource by a Reformed Pastor and multi-awarded and best-selling author, John Piper. Some of his works include: Spectacular Sins, Don’t Waste Your Life, The Passion of Jesus Christ, and Desiring God, among others, which consequently became the name of the evangelical organization he founded. He believes in Christian Hedonism and teaches that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” He is greatly influenced by the literature of Jonathan Edwards, Blaise Pascal, and C.S. Lewis.
When I Don’t Desire God is geared towards making God our ultimate desire, living a life of joyfulness because of Him and making Christ known to the world through self-sacrificial love and heart for the lost. All begins and ends with God. John Piper is a minister and author who is soaked in the Word of God therefore his writings are from an overflow of Scriptures deposited in Him and the power of the Holy Spirit through prayer and meditation.
“When I Don’t Desire God” caused me to love God more and to experience Him as not only my Savior and Teacher but as the Supreme Treasure of my soul. God wants us to enjoy Him and I have realized that the highest forms of pleasures, achievements, riches and everything this world offers are nothing compared to the satisfaction, contentment, happiness, joy, delight, desire, and love God gives. Apart from Him, there is no true joy. In Him, there is indescribable, amazing, incomparable gladness but we have to fight for it.
This book by John Piper is much like a manual to guide you to choose life over death, joy over depression, delight over tension, goodness over evil, and God over the enemy.
When I Don’t Desire God comes as a softcover, DVD, audio cd, and MP3 cds.
