Grace of Giving by Marja Meijers (Book Review)
The kingdom of God operates in reverse when contrasted with our earthly mindsets. You have to die in order to live. You have to love when you are hated. You have to let go in order to gain. You have to give for you to receive.
Marja Meijers releases the 4th book in her Ten Commandments series entitled Grace of Giving: Turning the Key to Enter and Experience Fullness of Life and focuses on the 8th Commandment, Do Not Steal. Her subject theme revolves around John 10:10 (NIV Bible translation)-
The thief comes only in order to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come in order that you might have life – life in all its fullness.
From this foundational verse, the book is divided into three (3) major parts—
The Warning – shows readers how the enemy steals, kills, and destroys here on earth and how we practically steal in our own lives, families, jobs, etc. then re-shaping our attitudes and actions in those areas.
The Grace – discusses on how Jesus gives abundant life on earth and how we will be transformed from gatherers to givers.
The Promise –assures believers on the kind of life Jesus promised to give on earth—symmetry on spirit, soul and body.
Marja Meijers introduces her book through the story of Robin Hood on his robbery of the rich and famous and distributing them to the poor. Meijers goes on to explain that thievery is more than just stealing from a cookie jar and giving is more than dropping money in the offering basket in church. Her emphasis is not on obeying or keeping the law, but fulfilling it, in love.
Meijers calls our attention to the culture and stronghold of amassing wealth, properties, positions, money and even ungodly desire for someone else’s partner as the way of the thief (enemy) and reveals how from Scriptures we will be able to follow the way of God through giving.
Personally, it is such a revelation to read from Grace of Giving that the “DO NOT” commandments should not end with what we should not do but with what we can do. Obeying and following the commandment, “Do Not Steal” is doing so much more than stating a rule. Instead, it’s a lesson in how you interact with others. You can give, love, and forgive. Jesus teaches in Scriptures, love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Love your enemies. It is not a request but a command.
At the end of each chapter, there are 3 Questions for meditation and a Journal space to jot down insights and thoughts. Grace of Giving is a short book of 116 pages but very profound and written in a contemplative manner.
Marja Meijers is from Holland but spends time with her husband Jan in her home state of California.
While they were traveling the world, they began their non-profit organization Traveling Light, which has a mission of “offering practical help, financial support, and spiritual encouragement to ministries in need”. She received the Lord in 2001 and became part of the advisory board of Teen Challenge. Marja speaks five (5) different languages and ministers powerfully though her books, involvements, and blogs.
